Campaign to plant 4 m seeds of native trees in Dhofar

Salalah: The Environment Authority (EA) in Dhofar Governorate carries out an environmental campaign to plant 4 million seeds of native trees in the governorate’s mountains. The initiative is part of the EA’s ongoing efforts to improve vegetation cover, combat desertification, enhance biodiversity and restore natural ecosystems.

The campaign, which runs from July 20 to 30, is the fruit of cooperation with Dhofar Municipality and the Awareness initiative team, with active participation by members of the local community. It covers the wilayats of Mirbat, Taqah, Salalah, Rakhyout, and Dhalkout.

Hatem bin Salem al Mahri, Director of the Vegetation Development Department at the Directorate-General of Environment in Dhofar Governorate, said that this is the fifth consecutive year for the campaign. He noted that choosing the hareef Dhofar Season provides optimal conditions for germination and early growth, due to abundant rainfall and dense fog which contribute to increasing the chances of seed germination and growth. During this season humidity helps seedlings develop a strong root system, enabling them to withstand subsequent periods of drought. He added that trees play a role in stabilizing the soil, reducing erosion, and maintaining its fertility thus supporting the sustainability of vegetation cover.

He noted that the participation of government institutions, volunteers, and community members in implementing the campaign reflects the importance of community partnership in protecting the environment, preserving natural resources, and supporting national efforts aimed at achieving environmental sustainability.
